Get real

Is it all over, then, for the ‘business case’? Not necessarily. It turns out that using a business case can, if nothing else, serve as useful cover for more delicate or sensitive conversations that executives might be uncomfortable having.

On matters of diversity or equal opportunities, for example, some leaders might feel a moral pressure to behave better and ‘do the right thing’. But they may be working in an environment in which admitting to moral feelings might not look good. It may not sound tough or ruthless enough, for example, or sufficiently financially driven.

Dr Louise Ashley of Royal Holloway, University of London (profile, Royal Holloway University of London), has argued that in such circumstances describing a business case can help executives avoid having the more explicitly moral (and therefore awkward) conversation. It is almost as if everyone knows that they don’t really believe the business case, but it sounds more purposeful and commercial than simply arguing for more ethical practices.
